Xylene (Mixed Isomers)

Overview

Mixed xylenes (xylene, dimethylbenzene, CAS 1330-20-7) are a colourless aromatic hydrocarbon solvent containing the ortho, meta and para isomers plus ethylbenzene. Typical published producer specifications: specific gravity about 0.865-0.875 (ASTM D4052/D1298), initial boiling point about 137°C minimum and dry point about 143°C maximum with a distillation range of about 5°C max (ASTM D850), aromatics about 99 wt% min with non-aromatic hydrocarbons from about 0.3 to 2 wt% max, and ethylbenzene about 18-20 wt% max, depending on the producer. Typical physical data: flash point about 27-32°C. Typical uses include solvent for paints, coatings, printing inks and adhesives, cleaning, and a chemical feedstock. It is flammable (UN 1307, Class 3), harmful by inhalation and skin contact, causes skin and eye irritation and may be fatal if swallowed and enter airways; use with good ventilation and protective equipment.
