Overview

Methanol (methyl alcohol, CAS 67-56-1) is a colourless, water-miscible alcohol and a major industrial chemical and solvent. A published producer specification (Sipchem, Saudi Arabia) lists purity 99.85 wt% min on a dry basis, water 0.1 wt% max, acetone 30 mg/kg max and ethanol 50 mg/kg max; ASTM D1152 covers the 99.85% grade, and limits vary by producer and lot. Typical physical data: boiling point about 65°C, flash point about 11°C, density about 0.792 g/cm3. Typical uses include formaldehyde and other chemical manufacture, solvent, antifreeze and windshield fluids, biodiesel production and fuel additives. It is highly flammable (UN 1230, Class 3 with toxic subsidiary hazard 6.1) and burns with a nearly invisible flame. It is toxic if swallowed, inhaled or in contact with skin and can cause blindness and organ damage; it must not be used where it could be consumed, and only trained personnel with ventilation, chemical-resistant gloves and respiratory protection should handle it.
