Toluene (Industrial / Nitration Grade)

Overview

Toluene (methylbenzene, CAS 108-88-3) is a colourless aromatic hydrocarbon solvent. Nitration-grade toluene is specified under ASTM D841, which sets requirements for non-aromatic hydrocarbons, acid wash colour, copper strip corrosion, appearance, Pt-Co colour and distillation range; one published nitration-grade specification (Ecopetrol, citing ASTM D841) lists toluene purity 98.8 g/100g min and non-aromatics 1.5 g/100g max, and purity and limits vary by producer and grade. Typical physical data: boiling point about 111°C, flash point about 4°C (closed cup), density about 0.867 g/cm3 at 20°C. Typical uses include thinner and solvent for paints, coatings and adhesives, a chemical feedstock and a process solvent. It is highly flammable (UN 1294, Class 3), may be fatal if swallowed and enter airways (aspiration hazard), is suspected of damaging the unborn child, and may cause drowsiness and organ damage on prolonged exposure; use only with good ventilation and suitable respiratory and skin protection. Some jurisdictions monitor or control toluene, so buyers may be asked to declare end use. Please request the producer certificate of analysis and SDS through the RFQ.
