Overview
Ethyl acetate (CAS 141-78-6) is a colourless, fast-evaporating ester solvent with a characteristic fruity odour. Typical published specification for the 99.5% grade: assay 99.5% min (GC), water about 0.05% max (up to 0.2% for some grades), colour 10 APHA max, acidity about 0.0005-0.005% (as acetic acid) and density about 0.898-0.902 g/mL; limits vary by producer and lot. Typical physical data: boiling point about 77°C, flash point about -4°C. Typical uses include solvent for coatings, lacquers, inks and adhesives, flexible packaging, extraction and cleaning. It is highly flammable (UN 1173, Class 3), causes serious eye irritation and may cause drowsiness; keep away from ignition sources, ground containers and ensure ventilation.
