Overview

Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK, 2-butanone, CAS 78-93-3) is a colourless, fast-evaporating ketone solvent with strong dissolving power for many resins. Typical published producer specification (ASTM D740 Type I / II): purity 99.5 wt% min, specific gravity about 0.805-0.807 at 20/20°C, colour 10 Pt-Co max and water about 0.05-0.1 wt% max (limits vary by producer); some producers quote typical purity above 99.9%. Typical physical data: boiling point about 80°C, flash point about -9°C (closed cup). Typical uses include solvent for vinyl, acrylic, epoxy and polyurethane coatings, inks, adhesives and cleaning, and as a chemical intermediate. It is highly flammable (UN 1193, Class 3), causes serious eye irritation and may cause drowsiness; keep away from ignition sources, ground containers and ensure ventilation. It attacks many plastics and rubbers. Some jurisdictions monitor or control MEK, so buyers may be asked to declare end use.
