Sulfuric Acid 98%

Overview

Sulfuric acid (oil of vitriol, CAS 7664-93-9) is a dense, colourless to pale-brown, oily and extremely corrosive acid. Typical published specification for the concentrated grade: H2SO4 98% min (technical grades are also supplied at about 93-94%), density about 1.84 g/mL at 25°C; impurity limits (iron, chloride, ash, reducing substances) depend on grade and producer, for example a published technical 93% sheet lists iron 50 ppm max. Typical uses include fertiliser and chemical manufacture, lead-acid battery electrolyte (after dilution), metal pickling and etching, drain and tank cleaning formulations, and drying or dehydrating agent. It is corrosive (UN 1830, Class 8): causes severe burns and reacts violently and exothermically with water; always add acid slowly to water, never water to acid. It chars organic materials, and reacts with metals to release flammable hydrogen. Use only acid-resistant storage, splash goggles, face shield, acid-resistant gloves and apron.
