Phosphoric Acid 85%

Overview

Phosphoric acid (orthophosphoric acid, CAS 7664-38-2) is a clear, colourless, syrupy acid. Typical published technical-grade specification: assay 85-88% H3PO4 (86.5% typical) by titration, specific gravity about 1.68-1.69 at 20°C, colour 15 APHA max, residue on ignition 0.05% max and iron about 2 ppm max; limits vary by producer and lot, and food/ACS grades are specified more tightly. Typical uses include rust removal and phosphating or conversion of steel surfaces, metal brightening, descaling and cleaning formulations, water treatment, and manufacture of phosphates and fertilisers. It is corrosive (UN 1805, Class 8): causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Use acid-resistant containers, gloves and eye protection, avoid contact with bases and with metals that release hydrogen, and dilute by adding acid to water.
