Nitric Acid 68%

Overview

Nitric acid (CAS 7697-37-2) is a colourless to pale-yellow, strongly oxidising mineral acid that fumes in air. Typical published specification for the 68% grade: assay 68-70% HNO3 for high-purity grades and 68-72% for technical grades by NaOH titration, density about 1.41 g/mL (1.408-1.418 g/mL), chloride and sulfate in the low ppm range on purer grades; limits vary by producer and lot. Typical uses include stainless-steel and metal pickling and passivation, etching, fertiliser and chemical manufacture and cleaning formulations. It is a strong oxidiser and corrosive (UN 2031, Class 8): causes severe burns, releases toxic brown nitrogen-oxide fumes, and can ignite or react violently with organic materials, solvents, metals powders and reducing agents. Store apart from organics and use only compatible materials (e.g. glass, stainless steel, specific fluoropolymers) with ventilation and full acid-resistant PPE.
