Propylene Glycol (MPG) USP/EP

Overview

Propylene glycol (monopropylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, CAS 57-55-6) is a colourless, practically odourless, viscous, hygroscopic liquid that is miscible with water. Typical published USP/EP-grade specification: assay 99.5% min (anhydrous basis), water 0.2% max (Karl Fischer), specific gravity 1.035-1.037 at 25/25°C (USP; 1.035-1.040 at 20°C by Ph. Eur.), ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol each 0.1% max, chloride 0.007% max, sulfate 0.006% max and residue on ignition 0.007% max; industrial grades are specified separately, and limits vary by producer and monograph version. Typical physical data: boiling point about 188°C, flash point about 99-107°C. Typical uses include food, flavour and pharmaceutical formulations, cosmetics and personal care, humectant, e-liquid base, heat-transfer fluids and low-toxicity antifreeze, and unsaturated polyester resins. It has low toxicity; avoid contact with eyes and do not mix up with ethylene glycol. Please request the producer certificate of analysis and SDS through the RFQ, and state whether you need USP/EP, food or industrial grade.
