Caustic Soda Solution 50% (Membrane Grade)

Overview

Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide, NaOH, CAS 1310-73-2) is a strong base used in the manufacture of pulp and paper, detergents, textiles and other products. The 50% liquid membrane-cell grade is the common bulk commercial form. Typical published producer specification ranges: NaOH 49.5-51.5 wt%, sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) 0.10 wt% max, sodium chloride (NaCl) about 100 ppm max, iron (Fe) about 3-4 ppm max, sodium chlorate and sulfate in the tens of ppm; exact limits vary by producer and lot. The solution has a density of about 1.52 g/cm3 at 20°C and begins to crystallise at about 12°C (54°F), so storage and transfer lines should be kept above that temperature. Typical uses include boiler systems, drilling, metal cleaning, pesticide production, pH adjustment and water conservation. It is corrosive (UN 1824, Class 8): it causes severe skin burns and eye damage, reacts exothermically with water and acids, and attacks aluminium, zinc and tin; use chemical-resistant gloves, face shield and protective clothing and follow the producer SDS. Please request the producer certificate of analysis and SDS through the RFQ.
