Overview

Caustic soda flakes are solid sodium hydroxide (NaOH, CAS 1310-73-2) in white flake form, supplied as a convenient dry bulk alkali. Typical published producer specification ranges for the industrial 99% grade: NaOH 99.0% min (98% min for some producers; up to 99.5% min dry basis for membrane-cell flakes), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) 0.3-0.5% max, sodium chloride (NaCl) about 0.015-0.05% max, iron as Fe2O3 about 0.001-0.005% max (about 5-20 ppm Fe for some producers); limits and basis vary by producer and lot. It is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from air, so containers must be kept tightly closed. Typical uses include soap and detergent manufacture, textile processing, water treatment and pH adjustment, pulp and paper, alumina and chemical manufacture, and industrial cleaning. It is corrosive (UN 1823, Class 8): it causes severe skin burns and eye damage and dissolves in water with strong heat; wear chemical-resistant gloves, face shield and protective clothing, never add water to the solid in a closed container, and follow the producer SDS. Producers commonly pack flakes in 25 kg bags. Please request the producer certificate of analysis and SDS through the RFQ.
